Left in a Cloud of Moke

The third round of the Motorkhana Championship and Series was held at Willowbank Dragstrip on Sunday 23 May. The excitement of the event drew 30 competitors to fight for points over the day and left spectators begging for more.

The event was filled with a vast variety of cars and drivers of all ages including specials, a Skyline, Mazda MX 5’s, a Niki and the very fast Moke of Gary Kotzur. Although the event is one car against the clock some drivers put on an incredible display of car manipulation. A great example of this was Michael Prout in the late model WRX STi. Michael kept the crowd and officials on their toes with his 4-wheel drifting.

The QMC is run on out-right times where as the QMS is awarded in a handicap system. This allows the larger cars such as Commodores and Skylines more of a chance to win on handicap. But as for the QMC it was Gary Kotzur leading all day in the super fast Moke and he was able to take the win over the always speedy Peter Lepherd in the turbo Mazda MX5. Noel Caplet driving the French Car Care special held down third despite getting it wrong in the Happy Birthday test.

BR was a highly contested class this weekend and featured nine drivers. With much tough driving and times being close, it was Lepherd over Ahsley Tyson in the Datsun 240Z and Malcolm Spiden in the ever consistent MGB GT.

Michael Parker driving his super tough and slightly modified Mitsubishi Sigma is one of the regulars in class CR and he was able to take the class win yet again. Parker finished ahead of Michael Linton running fast in his Nissan 300ZX and Dylan Bigg in the sweet sounding Chrysler SRT6. Parker had a good clean day with no penalties which helped him to score 11th outright.

Alan McConnell made an appearance in the Select Car Sales R32 Skyline and put in some good times. However McConnell made some errors in the latter half of the day and hit a couple of flags and even scored a Wrong Direction on Bowler. This left the door open for Terry Scharf driving the same car to beat his long time friend by a healthy margin.

With the next round of the QMS/QMC happening on Sunday June 26 be sure to hit the road and head out to Willowbank to watch the action.
