Maxwell Claims Superbike Spoils by Half-A-Point

Written by Lee McKenzie McKinnon on . Posted in Motor Sport, Motorcycle News, News

Wayne Maxwell has taken overall victory by a knife-edge at Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway, winning a closely-contested contest over Josh Waters by a mere half-a-point at round 3 of the QBE Australian Superbike Championship. A final turn, final corner pass in Sunday’s race was the clincher for Team Honda’s Maxwell, who wasn’t going to let victory pass him by. Maxwell and Team Suzuki’s Waters battled for the full 17-lap distance, with Waters appearing to take the advantage after Maxwell relinquished the lead running wide behind a backmarker. Maxwell staged an entertaining fightback, and set up the thrilling pass with a strong run onto the long back straight. There were millimetres in the move between the pair, great friends off track, but the fiercest of rivals with the visor down. Greasy conditions saw riders contending with changing levels of grip throughout the race, with WA local using Ben Henry his intimate knowledge of the track to claim a hard-fought third place finish. Cameron Stronach rounded out the top 5 on his BMW in a strong showing for local riders. Sunday’s race was bittersweet for Suzuki riders Waters and Robbie Bugden. The Team Volvo Group Suzuki pilot stormed into the lead before Waters assumed control after a lap. Bugden pounced on Procon Maxima BMW Glenn Allerton rider at mid-race distance, taking second and setting the quickest lap of the race. Unfortunately, his charge came to nothing when he was thrown spectacularly from his bike in a high-side crash at turn 1 a lap later. The race was red-flagged on lap 9, with Waters declared victor and Allerton returned to second place. Officials awarded half-points after the shortened affair, meaning Waters only claimed 12.5 points for his win while Maxwell took the full 25 on Saturday. 34 points played 33.5 in a narrow victory for Maxwell, who moves to second in the race for QBE Australian Superbike Championship honours. “It was a tough weekend with the conditions being wet and dry,” said Maxwell. “We had reasonable pace in the wet early on but it wasn’t ideal, and we were lucky to adapt quickly when it dried out. “The bike wasn’t quite there but we worked hard to improve it. “In the first race the conditions were really wet, and although we had good pace I nearly blew it 2 laps from the finish. “We were lucky enough to get out of jail on the last corner and I was really stoked to get my second win of the year. “In the dry we’re still working hard to find a setting with the new suspension. We’re slowly bridging the gap and it’s not for lack of trying – everyone’s giving it 110%. “It’s only a matter of time until we’re back at the top.” Waters added a fourth win to his 2012 tally and now leads the championship by 33.5 points. “The whole weekend went pretty good,” said Waters. “Unfortunately that final race got cut short so I didn’t get full points and didn’t get the overall which would normally happen if you got a pole, a second and a first but these things happen. “I have to say a huge thank you to the team who did a great job to be in the top 2 all weekend and I hope Robbie is okay after his crash.” Defending champion Allerton battled hard on the BMW and holds down third on the standings despite a tough run in damp conditions. The QBE Australian Superbike Championship returns to the track in a fortnight at Phillip Island, again racing alongside the V8 Supercars. AUSTRALIAN SUPERBIKE C’SHIP at Barbagallo Raceway, Perth. Hat Trick for Stewart

Written by Lee McKenzie McKinnon on . Posted in Motor Sport, News

American Shane Stewart continued his domination over the Australians by taking out last night’s Sprintcar race at the Perth Motorplex. Leading for the entire race, he demonstrated that he’s a force to be reckoned with, taking the 25-lap feature race from Jamie Maiolo and Brooke Tatnell. “I just can’t thank Luch enough for keeping me out here,” said Stewart of the Monte Motorsport team owner. “He is keeping me behind the wheel so when I do go back to America I will be pretty fresh.” It was Stewart’s third win, making him the only driver to claim a hat trick for the 2011/2012 season. Jamie Maiolo continues his campaign to take out this year’s AHG Sprintcar Series by securing second place on the night and giving him an even further lead ahead of his competitors on the leaderboard. “I would not normally be happy to run second, but Shane is no slouch,” said Maiolo. The series action resumes on Saturday March 24 at the Perth Motorplex with the running of the 50th Western Australian Sprintcar Championship. FEATURE RACE RESULTS:

WSS Grand Final

Written by Lee McKenzie McKinnon on . Posted in Motor Sport, News

The last 14 rounds of the World Series Sprintcars have all been leading up to this weekend’s Grand Final weekend at the Perth Motorplex. Current leader, James McFadden will be in the hot seat this weekend and looking to finish his top position with the ultimate grand final win on Saturday night. Wary of his competition in American driver Jason Johnson, McFadden is realistic about the challenge ahead of him. “I don’t think we can do it actually. James and his team have done a tremendous job this year and they deserve the Series win,” said McFadden. “We’re not going to give up by any means, but I would think it’s not really possible to run him down without him going on a holiday before the final round.” Local driver Kerry Madsen won’t be here to contest the top drivers having returned to the US, his brother Ian Madsen will be driving in his place. “We wish Kerry well in the American show this weekend and he will be back to defend our Krikke Boys Memorial in Bunbury pretty soon,” said team boss Geoff Kendrick. “In the meantime we have spoken to Ian’s car owner and his team has allowed Ian to substitute for us this weekend – we are grateful for their support.” 40 cars will battle it out for the $20,000 cash prize, with American drivers Kaley Gharst, Jason Johnson, Shane Stewart and Tyler Walker looking to take the trophy back to the US. The Grand Final will be held on Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th. Gates open at 4:30pm with first heats at 6:00pm on Friday and 5:15 on Saturday.

Sprintcar Muster Mania

Written by Lee McKenzie McKinnon on . Posted in Motor Sport, News

A warm and humid night at the Perth Motorplex only added to the heat on the track for the eighth annual Sprintcar Muster. Ben Ellement took out the 25 lap feature race, having been dominant for the majority of the night, winning both of his heats. Kerry Madsen looked like he was going to take the win, leading for the majority of the race, before blowing a tyre with two laps to go. “That was really cool, we had a good time, that was good fun chasing Kerry,” said Ellement. Ryan Farrell placed second whilst the ever consistent Jamie Maiolo placed third, although disappointed with his own placing. “It’s probably not where we wanted to end up after starting on the front row,” said Maiolo. Heat 1 saw American driver Kaley Gharst get the better of his competitors. Having flown over especially for the race Gharst was intent on making an impact. “We’ve been trying some new things with the car and we got a good restart. Kerry Madsen got a little close to me so I’ll have to find some more speed to stay in it tonight,” said Gharst. Ben Ellement dominated heat 3 and came out in front of tough contender Kerry Madsen and David Priolo. “We’ve been trying something a little different, but it seems to be going alright,” said Ellement. Trevor Harding took a big tumble in heat 4, damaging his car and putting an end to his night. “It was a bit slippery up the top, there was some touching of wheels and it was all over,” said Harding. The next AHG Sprintcar Series will be held at the Perth Motorplex on January 21. SPRINTCAR MUSTER FEATURE RACE OFFICIAL RESULTS;
